Art First! Artist Feature: Remi Goguen

By Angie McLeod

The ArtFirst! Gallery in downtown Revelstoke is a grassroots co-operative of local artists who work together to offer our community a stunning selection of original pieces as well as affordable prints and cards.

Each month curators focus on creating a balance with new submissions to replace sold work and highlight a Feature Artist of the Month. The first new show of 2019 opened the second week of January featuring local photographer Remi Goguen.

Originally from Moncton, New Brunswick, Remi started his career as a graphic designer. His passion for photography was sparked when struck with a travel bug in 2005 on a ten month adventure to New Zealand and Fiji. Once back home, he explored communities throughout B.C.’s West Coast, Big White Ski Resort, Banff, AB and Nelson B.C.

Risky Step

Remi’s next overseas adventure; a two year working holiday in Australia (2010-2012) provided an opportunity to focus on developing his photography and design skills. It’s here where he found inspiration from photographer Eugene Tan’s taste for composition that captured surf culture at  Bondi Beach.

Revelstoke became home to Remi in 2012. Over the last six years he has worked in the hospitality industry and at a local sawmill. When asked what image he feels most connected to his response was without hesitation “Selkirks in the Clouds! That image propelled me to go deeper in this whole passion and print my own work.” Remi Goguen describes his approach as “positioning the focus so that every element is a part of the composition and has a place within the picture.”

As far as his go-to gear, he uses a Nikon D4 attached to either one his two favorite lenses; a 24-70mm f2.8 and a 70-200mm f2.8 “It’s a pretty heavy kit, but it’s worth carrying. Eventually I see myself going to mirrorless to at least save weight.” Recently he invested in a professional Epson SureColor P8000 44” printer to add to his home studio. Using archival rated photo paper, Remi offers professional reproductions which will last generations if properly cared for.

Through years of experience and a fierce passion that encompasses every aspect of photography from planning and set up to the final print and framing Remi Goguen is definitely a photographer to follow in the Revelstoke arts community.
