The Canadian Avalanche Association (CAA) is a non-government, not-for-profit organization that serves and supports the diverse community of professional avalanche operations in Canada. The CAA establishes technical standards, delivers specialized programs and services, and represents the avalanche community to external stakeholders. The programs and services of the CAA have helped to create and continue to foster the world-class professional operating environment for front-line avalanche safety operations in Canada.

About InfoEx
InfoEx is a daily web-based exchange of technical snow, weather, avalanche and terrain information between subscribers, and can also be used as a record keeping system.
Subscribers are organizations and commercial businesses who actively manage avalanche hazards during the winter months (e.g. heliskiing companies, BC Highways, ski areas, mountain parks). InfoEx is a Canadian service giving avalanche professionals access to data that is accurate, relevant and real time. This knowledge improves each subscriber’s awareness of conditions in the other subscribers’ operating areas, greatly enhancing their ability to manage their local avalanche risks.

InfoEx also serves as one of the key sources of data used by Avalanche Canada’s public avalanche forecasters to produce and verify their products. The value of the InfoEx contribution to public avalanche safety is estimated at an excess of $2 million annually.

JOB SUMMARY/OVERVIEW
The Software Developer’s role is to maintain and develop the CAA’s InfoEx software. Work will primarily focus on full stack software development, but also includes assisting the InfoEx manager with troubleshooting and elements of DevOps and Systems Administration.

JOB FUNCTIONS
InfoEx/Software Development
• Software development and maintenance of the CAA’s InfoEx system (JavaScript/jQuery client, Java/Hibernate/Spring server) including new features and bug fixes

• Development of a new mobile-first Progressive Web Application
• Support of the CAA’s InfoEx system, including system administration and everything required to ensure the highest possible system uptime

• Giving technical assistance to the InfoEx manager with troubleshooting and specifications.

QUALIFICATIONS

Preferred Education and Experience:
University degree in a related field plus multi-year employment in a software development role

Required Technical Skills/Experience:
• Multi-year experience with web application development
• Programming proficiency in JavaScript/jQuery
• Programming proficiency using Java with Spring/Hibernate
• Experience using SQL Databases (PostgreSQL)
• Understanding of software design principles
• Knowledge of Issue Tracking (Jira), Continuous Integration (Bitbucket) and Monitoring

(Dynatrace/AWS)
• Knowledge of Version Control Systems (Mercurial)
