For the second year running, Aza Deschamps is taking part in the Canadian Broadcasting Company (CBC) annual Searchlight competition. Searchlight is a long running musical competition, aimed at discovering and showcasing Canadian musical talent. The competition is judged by both celebrities – successful musicians across multiple styles of music, and audience voting.
Last year, her original song Strangers from her debut album Aza Nabuko with Jump Attack Records, made it to the top 100 songs in the competition. This year, the second single, Ordinary, has been accepted into the competition.
“The top ten this year would be amazing,” says Sarah Mickel, Aza’s mum and biggest supporter. “But it’s great exposure either way.”
In the year since her albums release, Aza’s been played on CBC radio and kept busy performing regularly in the lower mainland. She is, Mickel notes, in the process of connecting with a booking partner. When not performing or creating, Aza is keeping busy at Dose Coffee and the Annex, saving for her move to the city this autumn.
You can vote for Aza until Feb. 13th. On Feb. 19th, the top 100 contestants will be listed and voting will resume for the successful artists.
