Obituary Notice – Giovanni Antonio (Johnny) Piluso

Giovanni Antonio (Johnny) Piluso passed away at Mount Cartier Court Extended Care, Revelstoke on Saturday, July 11 th , 2020 at the age of 86 years. A Graveside Service took place at Mountain View Cemetery, Revelstoke, on Friday, July 17 th at 11:00 a.m. with Father Cecil Nunez celebrant.

Giovanni was born on September 1, 1933 in Spezzano Piccolo, Cosenza, Italy and immigrated to Canada in 1956. He joined his sister Ersilia in Revelstoke. Here he found a large Italian population from his hometown of Spezzano Piccolo and settled into Canadian life.

In his early years, Giovanni worked as a forest fire fighter in the mountains surrounding Revelstoke and later as a construction worker at the Mica Dam. He was part of the Revelstoke Men’s Soccer team, comprised mainly of Europeans that travelled through the Okanagan playing their national game.

Giovanni had a passion for gardening and loved to grow and give away his treasured tomatoes. He was proud to have his tomato garden included in the Mountain Harvest publication, featuring seniors and their gardens. Giovanni also loved to go mushroom picking and his red Chevy pickup could be seen heading to all his secret spots from Nakusp to Malakwa. Each fall he looked forward to making wine with his wine making group and was always proud of the results.

Giovanni was a very fit senior who would walk to town several times a day. The Post Office and music at the Plaza were rarely missed. Unfortunately, two years ago his health declined, and he has been cared for by the Staff at Mt. Cartier Court.

Giovanni was predeceased by his mother Emilia Sapia, sister Ersilia Donato and brother-in-law Ottavio Donato. He is survived by his son Robert (Tessa) Piluso; grandchildren Willow and Logan; nieces and nephews: Rose (Bob) Robinson, Susan Oikle (Alan Smythe), Frank (Betty) Donato, JoAnn Norberg (Mark Hunter) and John Donato; great nephew and nieces: Tyler, Karrie, Andrea and Crystal as well as relatives in the USA, Germany and Italy.

A special thanks to the staff of Mt. Cartier Court, Anne Marie Gill and Dr. Kate McCarroll.
