Joseph Doyle Burke (Joe) October 14, 1946 – February 26, 2020
Joe died peacefully at home in Revelstoke BC on February 26, 2020 aged 73 years. Joe was born in Louisbourg, Nova Scotia and has four sisters Kathleen, Marleen, Lynn and Patricia and one brother Phillip. Joe has one daughter, Cynthia. His mom Sarah and dad Joseph were also born in Nova Scotia. Joe was predeceased by both his parents and one sister Patricia.
Joe joined the Canadian Armed Forces at age 18, beginning his 20-year long career in the Medical Corp as a medical assistant and went on to become a Preventative Medicine Technician serving in both Cyprus and Egypt. Joe’s military posts were Peacekeeping Missions and he saw no conflicts.
Joe rose to the rank of Master Corporal and was awarded the United Nations Medal for his service in Cyprus and the National Emergency Force Medal for his service in the Middle East. Additionally, Joe was honoured with the Queen Elizabeth 11 Jubilee Medal in 1977. Joe was honourably released from service in 1984.
Joe married while serving in the Military and they had one daughter Cynthia. Unfortunately, the marriage did not last and Joe lost contact with his daughter as he moved across Canada ending up in BC living in both Wells and Lillooet before coming to Revelstoke in 2001. Joe had many jobs including car washing and bartending. Joe had a wry sense of humour and enjoyed any conversation involving trains, cars or music. Joe loved and missed Nova Scotia and was proud to have been a Maritimer.
Joe enjoyed doing Crossword and Jigsaw Puzzles, playing Solitaire and especially enjoyed a good game of Darts. Joe was well known to visit the plaza most evenings during the Summer Street Festival to listen to the live music and was especially endeared to the dancing children he would see there with their parents.
Joe was a member of the Revelstoke Awareness and Outreach Program since 2007 and enjoyed many social activities and was always ready to help out with any task. Joe will be fondly and forever missed by the many friends he made while living in Revelstoke for the past 19 years.
A Funeral Service will be held from the Chapel of Brandon Bowers Funeral Home on Saturday, March 14 th , 2020 at 11:00 a.m., followed by interment in Mountain View Cemetery, Revelstoke.
