Obituary Notice – Norma Josephine Hodgson (née Wickson)

Norma Josephine Hodgson (née Wickson)

July 22, 1921 – August 26, 2020.

On August 26, 2020, at age 99, our mother, Norma, passed on after a life well lived. She joins our father, Harry, who died in 2005. Her four children, Lynne, Kent, Dave (Bonnie) and Rick (Janet), ten grandchildren and ten great grandchildren remain to reminisce about all the good times and her Christmas in July.

Norma spent her childhood on the family dairy farm outside Oakville within sight of Lake Ontario with three sisters (Lois, Shirley and Audrey) and brother (Ford). One of her teenage years was spent sick in bed. Yes, she got out of doing chores.

At the beginning of WWII, determined to leave home, she went to join the Army. They turned her down. Their loss. So, she walked down the street and enlisted in the Women’s Division of the Royal Canadian Air Force. Starting as a photographer, and then Corporal, then promoted to Wife, and then to Mother of Four, she served with the RCAF for eight postings in three provinces until our father retired in 1971. He was a Warrant Officer.

Their retirement moved them to a beautiful lake in the cottage country of Ontario. In 2004, they escaped to province number four, British Columbia, to be with the western branch of their family. She kept up with the eastern crew through Facebook and through email. She had checked in on them the night before her passing.

Her entire family in B.C., Alberta and Ontario would like to express their deepest thanks to the staff at Mount Cartier Court in Revelstoke for the loving and professional care of Mom over the years and through recent difficult and hazardous times. Doctor Veale will stand out in our memory as a friend and a doctor. Many thanks, Francine, for the walks and window visits. They were a bright spot in her days.

Her family will be celebrating our parents’ lives next year with the interment of their ashes and a memorial in a small heritage churchyard on 12 Mile Lake in the cottage country of Ontario. Then stories will be told, tears will be shed and laughter will be shared. There may even be a silent glass or two raised and drained in thought and prayer. We miss you Mom and Dad.
