Revelstoke Food Bank in Need of Donations

Revelstoke’s Community Connections Food Bank is putting out a call for donations. The warehouse is empty and the food at the Legion is all the food there is.

“Now is a good time to donate,” says Community Connections Patti Larson. “We are dipping into our budgets big time right now, and need canned fruits, vegetables and meats, pasta sauce, cereal, and things kids can take to school for snacks.”

The Food Bank is utilized by many local individuals, families and seniors. These are people you know, your friends or neighbours or maybe yourself.

If there are any local groups or businesses interested in running a food drive or fundraiser, now is the time. Larson notes that Sky Trek will be involved in a fundraiser for the food banks of Malakwa, Sicamous and Revelstoke on June 8, with more details to follow.

Larson is also encouraging locals who garden to consider participating in the ‘Plant a Row’ program. Promoted through the Compost Council of Canada, the Plant a Row program involves planting and harvesting a row of vegetables for the food bank.

“It’s a reminder that the food bank always needs food. Particularly at this time of year,” says Larson. “When it’s time to harvest, we happily take donations of fresh food and veggies.”

Last year, tomatoes, potatoes, squash, lettuce, kale, gleaned fruit, carrots, peas and more, were gratefully accepted.

Community Connections Food Bank also has food bank garden, funded in part through Food Banks Canada, and hosted by Keith Starling and family at Take to Heart Specialty Wood Products. Anyone interested in volunteering can visit the facebook site.

“What we saw last year with food bank garden was that there was a lot of kale and lettuce, and they were really popular foods. You might not think kale would go like crazy because it’s a fairly new trendy veggie, but it does. People were willing to try anything and ended up using it in pasta, stir frys and smoothies.”

Donations to the food bank can be made four days a week at Community Connections or Fridays at the food bank, located in the basement of the Legion.
