Broken Gas Line Requires Cut Power, Closed Businesses and Evacuated Public Buildings

The Revelstoke Community and Aquatic Centre, Revelstoke Forum and many downtown businesses were evacuated after a gas leak in a back alley off Mackenzie Avenue earlier today. The Revelstoke Fire Rescue Services cut the power from the downtown to the highway as a precaution.

Though not official, it looks as though a private commercial contractor, digging in the back alley between the Revelstoke Community Centre and Mackenzie Avenue, struck and broke a buried gas pipe in the mid afternoon. By 2:40 pm, the Revelstoke Fire Rescue Services had closed the street and FortisBC was onsite.  It is unknown if the contractor had previously called BC 1 Call  , a free service that provides information regarding buried gas lines in the area.

By 7 pm the power had been restored.
