Obituary Notice – Gerda Sophie Winter

On December 2, 2019 Gerda Winter passed away peacefully, surrounded by her immediate family. She is survived by her daughter Andrea, her son Norman, her grandson Leif, and, in Germany, her siblings: Manfreid Schoenig, Malice Novak and Friedhelm Schoenig.

Gerda was born in Wattenscheid, Germany on March 27, 1932. Early in the Second World War she was moved to Eastern Germany where she lived with foster parents for a time. She had an active childhood and would often recount stories of skiing in the Alps. It is assumed that after the war she completed a business assistant degree or certificate.

In 1956 Gerda started corresponding with Fred Winter and on October 1, 1957 they married. The new couple soon returned to Flin Flon, Manitoba to start a new life together and raise a family. They had a passion for x-country skiing and spent many hours volunteering for the local club. Gerda was well renowned at local gatherings for her delicious meals and mouthwatering pastries.

She spent her time raising her family and working part time at the local newspaper, The Daily Reminder. Summers were spent at the cottage where she enjoyed swimming and gardening.

In 1994 Fred and Gerda moved to Salmon Arm, B.C. to be closer to family. While in B.C. they engaged in x-country skiing, swimming, dancing and gardening.

A Memorial Service will be held at Brandon Bowers Funeral Home in Revelstoke, B.C. on Monday, December 9, 2019 at 2:00 p.m. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Cancer Society or The Salvation Army.
