August 12, 1975 – July 16, 2019
It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Peter Jules Thomas Nicholson in Vernon, B.C. on Tuesday, July 16th, 2019 at the age of 43 years.
He took his own life after falling into a low brought on by bipolar disorder, which he first developed in his early twenties.
Despite the challenges of the disease, Peter received a B.A. with Distinction from the University of Victoria in Philosophy in 1998 and graduated from the University of British Columbia’s Faculty of Medicine in 2009. In 2015 he received a specialist certificate in General Pathology from the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada.
From 2015, he worked at Vernon Jubilee Hospital as a pathologist. During his medical career, he made numerous contributions to the community and was highly respected by his peers.
Peter was raised in Revelstoke and worked in the area as a tree planter in the summers of 1995-1997 and enjoyed cross-country skiing in the winters. He was also a Renaissance man of many talents. He played the piano, took a keen interest in design, tailored his own clothes and was a connoisseur of good food and drink. He also had an impeccable sense of style and was well-versed in literature, history, philosophy and music. His sincerity, dedication and witty sense of humour endeared him to all.
Peter is survived by his loving parents Mengia and Jeff Nicholson of Revelstoke, and brother Matthew (Chieko), nephew Hugo and niece Sara of Tokyo, as well as his many relatives, friends and colleagues around the world.
To honour his memory, a service will be held at the Coast Hillcrest Hotel on Friday afternoon, July 26 at 2:00 p.m., with an informal gathering to follow. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions can be made to World Wildlife Fund Canada or a charity of choice.
