It started in 1994 with a turkey dinner at the United Church. 27 people turned up. Over the years it has grown so significantly that this long standing seasonal staple attracts hundreds of people. Everyone is welcome and Revelstokians from all walks of life and all socio-economic backgrounds come together to enjoy each others company for a festive meal at the Community Christmas Dinner.
The entire event is run by volunteers and funded by donations, and unsurprisingly, an event of this size requires significant organization and volunteer commitment. For many, volunteering yearly, often with their families, has become an annual tradition.
Organizers for this years dinner are seeking volunteers, and interested individuals can contact Melissa Kennedy at 250-200-0404 or by email at melissajjkennedy@gmail.com, or Stacie Byrne at 250-200-0022. Individuals or businesses interested in donating can contact Cheryl Fry at 250-837-1290.
Representatives of the Community Christmas Dinner will be at the Volunteer Fair, Tuesday, Nov. 26th from 4 pm – 7 pm at the Revelstoke Community Centre.
“Our elves will be there with bells and whistles,” jokes Kennedy.
Volunteers can also come attend a meeting on Monday, December 16 at 6 pm in the Macpherson Room at the Revelstoke Community Centre.
